In this tutorial we will create a typographic 3D with Illustrator and give a touch of Photoshop to create more realistic effect. We will create a text with the effects of stone stands beside ‘Tugu Jogja’ at night with a fairly easy technique. Here we will also learn about lighting techniques and use texture to create more realistic 3D effect.
Final Image Preview
Before we get started, take a look at the image we’ll be created. You also can
view the actual size.
Step 1
Open
Adobe Illustrator to start creating 3D text. Using
Type Tool type ‘Jogja’ using capital letters. Font that I use here
Helvetica LT Black with 300 pt font size with the font color white #FFFFFF (in the following figures using black color only to be seen).
Step 2
Click on the text ‘Jogja’ with the
Selection Tool and then select
Effect > 3D > Extrude & Bevel and set like the following picture. Press OK when you’re done.
Step 3
Select
Edit > Copy to copy the 3D text we have made, or press Ctrl + C. Open
my photograph of Jogja’s monument with Photoshop. Paste the 3D text in Photoshop document, press Ctrl + V will appear paste options, select the
Smart Object.
Step 4
The next step we will create the effect of cracks on the road that lies below the text. Open this
fractured land image with Photoshop and paste in our documents. Press Ctrl + T and minimize the size of the soil texture. Do not press enter, right click on the layer of soil texture and choose
Distort. Click on each corner and slide it up like the following picture.
hit enter, change the Blending Mode to
Multiply. Delete some parts of the edge rows of soil texture to be more realistic and the Corners are not visible.
Step 5
Now we will create 3D text look like stone. Open this
wall texture with Photoshop and paste to our documents. Press Ctrl + T and minimize the size of the wall texture. Right click on the wall texture layer then select the
Distort and drag each corner until like the following screenshot. Create a selection around the text JOGJA, then add a layer mask on the wall texture.
Change blending mode of the wall texture layer to Linear Burn with opacity 70%. Until here we get following picture.
Step 6
Create New Adjustment Layer by clicking Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Levels and then select Lighten Shadow at level option. This makes 3D text brighter. Press Alt and click on the border line layer 2 and layer-level, this will create a level only gives effect to the layer 2.
Step 7
Create a new layer. Make a selection as we did in step 5, use the
Gradient Tool (G) to create Linear Gradient from black to transparent at the bottom of the 3D text.
Step 8
Note the color of Tugu Jogja, seems a bit yellow at night. We will create 3D text has a color such as the Tugu Jogja to make it more realistic. Add a new layer above the layer ‘levels 1′. Make another selection as we did in step 5. Change foreground color to #fb8701, fill the selection with #fb8701 area using the
Paint Bucket Tool (G). Change the blending mode to
Color and add a Layer Mask. Perform masking using the
Gradient Tool (G) at the bottom of the text.
Step 9
The next step is to give some shadow of 3D text. Use the Pen Tool (P) to create a path like the following picture. Create a new layer, fill the path with black #000000, on the menu bar select Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur with a radius of 2 pixels. Change the opacity to 60%.
do the same for the other letters, we’ll get a picture like the following.
Step 10
Type ‘JOGJA’ with
Helvetica LT Black font, font size 300 pt with the font color black #000000. On layer palette, right-click this new layer, select
Convert to Smart Object. Press Ctrl + T and do distort transformation as in step 4. Change Opacity to 60% and click
Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur, use a radius of 3 pixels.
Step 11
Give a little more shadow on the bottom of the text. Create an elliptical path under the letter J, create a new layer and fill this path with black. Click
Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur, use a radius of 3 pixels and change the layer Opacity to 60%. Do it for the rest of the other letters with the size of the ellipse according to the letters that will be given a shadow.
Step 12
The final step, create a new layer by choosing
Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves and place on top position on the layer palette. Set the Curve as a screenshot below.
